Time, Tools, and Material: Inventive Approaches to Unconventional Media Concept
This is a class created for artists with a mind for experimenting with materials and having those materials help direct their artistic explorations. It is for all ages as it requires imagination and unconventional thinking more than skill. The majority of art work we encounter in the world reflects a division between media and subject, where the media is used to create the illusion of something. In our quest for representation and illusion, we often miss the potential of various media to exercise wonderful internal qualities. Like swimming with the current, it’s also often easier to use the natural qualities of a material to locate composition than to bend it against its will.
We will investigate a wide array of materials, keeping an eye out for their natural qualities and capabilities. From there we will experiment with them in the manner of Richard Serra’s ‘verb list.’ We’ll note the effects of our interventions and decide which ones are worth pursuing further. The second half of the class will involve each student working with one or two specific materials independently, looking to elaborate on our initial investigations and tease out an individual composition or series of compositions as a final takeaway.
