River Arts is pleased to feature one of our most long-standing artists, Dennis Alfred Phillips, as well as welcome guest artist Wilson Creek Pottery. Dennis specializes in all things fiber art, making high end wearable art using knitting, weaving, natural dyes, handwoven silks, and more. Wilson Creek Pottery, aka potter Ashley Pfannensteil, creates classic, versatile, and beautiful pottery that fits seamlessly into your everyday life. On view for a limited time only!
Join us for an evening on the river! At the reception, the public can meet with the artists, see their new work, and enjoy light hors d’oeuvres provided by the gallery. Artist talk begins at 6pm.
Dennis Alfred Phillips
There is more than meets the eye with Dennis Alfred Phillips. He is a self-taught textile artist. He was raised by a seamstress/tailor who taught him to sew, knit and crochet starting at the age of six. He studied weaving and dyeing while earning a degree in elementary and special education. His travels to Asia and Europe enhanced and provoked his creative process. Weaving began in 1977 and he started loom knitting in 1983, introducing Japanese shibori tie-dying techniques in 1999. His works are one of a kind.
Few artists can say their work was commissioned by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, but Dennis Alfred Phillips can. Other commissions include items for members of the British and Dutch royal families and works for American Players Theatre among others. He works from a studio in Spring Green, Wisconsin, and cites his southwest Wisconsin surroundings as influences in his designs.
“I refer to my art and craft as couture with spirit/ARTwear avec esprit. I approach each piece as an individual, using different techniques, fibers and fabrics, allowing each stitch, fold, pleat and touch of color and feeling to create a unique and personal garment.”
