“In December 2011, I visited the Milwaukee Art Museum to see the exhibition “Impressionism: Masterworks on Paper.” The first room was filled with small works, including pastels by Edward Degas. This room captivated me. I was charmed by the small scale and intimacy of the work, the torn edges and irregularities of old soft paper. Driving home that evening, I knew I wanted to do a show incorporating
