Students Should Bring: an item that you’ve patched previously (to sashiko stitch over) and/or an item you’d like to applique on – could be clothing or something else!
Level: Beginner/No prior experience necessary
Ages: 16+
This class will build on the skills taught in my mending 101 class (which covers darning and patching). Taking that class from me is not a prerequisite but you should be comfortable with general hand sewing and have some experience patching.
This class will explore some of the more decorative options in mending and upcycling clothing. Sashiko stitching is a decorative stitching method that often covers patched holes, it serves to make our mends more beautiful while also adding a ton of strength! Needle turn applique is more on the decorative side of things but can strategically be used to cover small rips and stains.
Artist Bio: As a lifelong artist and maker, I work in a wide array of mediums and have learned all my skills from friends, family, community and many (many) years of trial and error. I’ve never been able to stick to making just one type of thing. My work explores many skills and styles and is more defined by my processes and values than any specific format. Most importantly, I believe that this should all be fun. Don’t get me wrong, art is an incredibly vast form of expression. It can be a vehicle for basically any and all emotions or messages. But for me? It’s joy, connection, worthiness and an earnest love for the world and all the people in it.
