5th Biennial Wings & Water Juror: Mary Dickey
Born in 1946 in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin, Mary considers herself “a maker” and has from a young age.
From cardboard box houses to beaded jewelry, to mosaic sculpture and more, the challenge and reward was always to make something satisfying and beautiful.
A strong believer in the power of the arts in everyday life and the value of play, Mary considers art making an extension of imaginative hours spent as a child.
Graduating with a BS in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, she shared this aesthetic with her students from K-12 both in the River Valley and Sauk Prairie School Districts.
Her involvement in local arts includes 1) founding member of Riverside Players (now Sauk Prairie Theater Guild) 2) Member of the Gallery Committee at the River Arts Center (responsible for creating and hanging visual art there for several years at its inception) and 3) legacy artist at the River Arts on Water Gallery where she shows her work and co-curates with artist Rhonda Nass.
Past exhibitions include “Jewelry USA” , a competitive national show sponsored by the American Craft Museum and the Society of North American Goldsmiths., and the international show which followed, “American Jewelry Now.” Her work is also included in the book, “The New Beadwork.” Her more recent sculptural work was shown in the Watrous Gallery show, “Handmade Meaning” and her large mosaic installation, “A Call to Beauty” began at the Farm/Art Dtour as part of Fermentation Fest. It now resides in the Dickey family property amidst the prairie in Roxbury.
Involved in creating the “Wings and Water” biennial show, she is very pleased to be chosen as the juror this year.
