Join artist Mary Dickey for this two-part class on making mosaic vases! Students should each bring their own glazed ceramic (i.e. not glass) vase they want to use, and Mary will show you how to add mosaic pieces to enhance and transform the original vase. Vases can be very simple; Mary recommends great finds at thrift stores, auctions, and garage sales! The look of the vase in the beginning doesn’t matter – as long as it has a shape you love! It should be something that you won’t mind altering, perhaps even breaking and reassembling. If you are not able to find one ahead of time, Mary will have a selection of vases available for purchase the day of the class as well.
Day 1: The first session will be spent picking out mosaic pieces and learning how to adhere them to the vase securely and safely. This process uses broken parts of porcelain, glass, ceramic, shells, old beads or buttons, old jewelry, and any other materials collected over the years. If you have any broken china, glassware, beads, buttons, jewelry, shells, or other materials you want to use as part of your vase, please bring them along! Vases will be left to dry for the week to make sure materials are well adhered.
Day 2: The second session will be for grouting. Students will check to make sure all pieces are still securely fastened, and then learn how to mix grout with the right color and consistency for your project. Depending on the size of your vase, this class may not take the entire 3 hrs to complete. Finished vases will be taken home to finish drying for a few more days, and then polishing.
Dress code: This class can get messy. Please bring an apron, or wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.
What to Bring: Ceramic vase (not glass!), broken ceramic pieces, shells, mirror shards, old buttons, beads, old jewelry, etc. Basically, start collecting and bring whatever you gather. Students will share what they’ve brought and get the creative juices flowing. Mary will also have a few pieces to share with the group as well.
